Lake County has more quiet places to walk in the woods than most people realize. Between the sinkhole preserves around Eustis, the boardwalks over Lake Dora, and the state park land down in Clermont, there is a trail here for a ten minute stroll and one for a half day hike, often within a few miles of each other.
This guide covers the trails and nature parks we point friends and clients to most, organized by how long you want to spend on your feet. All of them are free or close to it, and most allow leashed dogs.

Are these trails dog-friendly?
Most are, on a leash. Hidden Waters Preserve is the one exception on this list and does not allow pets. Always a good idea to double check a park's current pet policy before you head out with your dog.
Which trail is easiest for kids or beginners?
Tavares Nature Park and Palm Island Park are both short, flat, and well under a mile and a half round trip, so they're the easiest starting points. Lake May Reserve's 1.8-mile loop has some rolling terrain but stays wide and well-marked the whole way, so it's manageable for most casual hikers.
Do any of these charge admission?
Most of the county and city-run preserves are free. Trout Lake Nature Center charges $5 per vehicle, and Lake Louisa State Park charges $5 per vehicle for up to eight people (less for a single occupant or pedestrians), since it's a Florida state park.
What should I bring?
Water, sun protection, and bug spray year-round. Florida trails get buggy and humid outside of the cooler months, and most of these have limited shade in spots.
When is the best time of year to hike in Lake County?
Late fall through early spring is the most comfortable stretch, with lower humidity and fewer mosquitoes. Summer hiking is doable early in the morning, but afternoon heat and storms make it less enjoyable.
