A Little Mount Dora History

Mount Dora began developing in the late 1800s. In 1880, Ross C. Tremain became the community’s first official postmaster when the settlement was known as Royellou.

The community officially adopted the name Mount Dora in 1883 after nearby Lake Dora. Local tradition connects the lake’s name to early settler Dora Ann Drawdy, although historical records leave some uncertainty about the exact origin of the name.

The arrival of the railroad in 1887 helped the area grow as both an agricultural community and a winter destination. Visitors came for fishing, boating and Central Florida’s mild winters, and several early hotels helped establish Mount Dora as a resort town.

One of those early properties eventually became the historic Lakeside Inn, which remains part of Mount Dora today.
