Mount Dora Beyond Downtown: 10 Places Worth Knowing
Downtown Mount Dora gets most of the attention, and for good reason. The shops, restaurants, festivals and Lake Dora waterfront make it an easy place to spend a day.
But Mount Dora is bigger than those few downtown blocks.
Venture a little farther out and you'll find antique markets, mountain-bike trails, quiet parks, lake access, garden centers and local food stops that don't always make the standard visitor itinerary.
If you already know downtown well, want to see a different side of Mount Dora, or you're spending time here because you're considering a move, these are ten places worth knowing.
For Antiques & Treasure Hunting
Renninger's Florida Twin Markets
Renninger's may be well known, but it feels completely different from downtown Mount Dora.
The sprawling property along US-441 combines antiques, vintage finds, collectibles, flea-market vendors and specialty events. It's the kind of place where you can stop in intending to browse for an hour and realize much more time has passed.
For Getting Outside
Mount Dora has more outdoor recreation than you might expect, including mountain-bike trails, wooded parks and waterfront nature areas.
Mount Dora Mountain Bike Trails
Mountain biking probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Mount Dora, which is exactly why this belongs on the list.
The trail system makes use of Mount Dora's natural elevation changes and gives riders something completely different from shopping and restaurants.
Good for: A more active side of Mount Dora.
Trimble Park
Trimble Park feels like a completely different version of Mount Dora.
Set between Lake Beauclair and Lake Carlton, the park has water on both sides, large trees, trails and access to the Harris Chain of Lakes.
This is one of the places I'd suggest when someone says, “I've already done downtown. What else is there?”
Good for: Quiet scenery, nature and time near the water.
Palm Island Park
Palm Island is close to downtown, but once you step onto the boardwalk it feels removed from the shops and restaurants.
The natural area follows the Lake Dora shoreline with a wooden boardwalk, mature vegetation and places to slow down and enjoy the water.
Good for: A short nature walk without going far.
Simpson Cove
Simpson Cove is one of those practical Mount Dora places worth knowing if you spend time around the lakes.
The waterfront area includes boat access, fishing areas and a place to get close to Lake Dora without making an event out of it.
It's also a good reminder that Mount Dora isn't simply a town with a lake view. Life on the Harris Chain is a real part of the area.
Good for: Boaters, anglers and lake access.
For Garden People
Yard Stop Garden Center
Garden people, this one is for you.
Yard Stop sits away from the downtown shopping district and is one of those places locals tend to know because they actually shop there.
Whether you're looking for plants, landscaping ideas or simply enjoy wandering through a garden center, it's another little piece of everyday Mount Dora that rarely makes a visitor guide.
Good for: Plants, landscaping inspiration and anyone who never passes a garden center without stopping.
Local Food Stops Beyond Downtown
Downtown has plenty of restaurants, but sometimes the more interesting local stops are the ones you find when you're already headed somewhere else.
5th Avenue Streatery
5th Avenue Streatery sits outside the busiest downtown blocks and has a relaxed, casual feel that fits perfectly into a guide like this.
It's the kind of place that works when you want good food without turning lunch into a whole downtown outing.
Good for: Casual lunch, outdoor dining and a local neighborhood feel.
Highland Street Cafe
Highland Street Cafe is one of those longtime local places that feels far removed from the polished downtown restaurant scene.
It's a casual breakfast-and-lunch stop with an old-school neighborhood feel, and it's a good example of the Mount Dora people use every day.
Good for: Breakfast, lunch and a more everyday local experience.
The Unexpected One
MANSION
Sydonie Mansion
This may be the most unexpected stop on the list.
Sydonie Mansion is a historic estate in the Mount Dora area with an elaborate home and grounds that feel very different from anything you'll see downtown.
Historic tours are offered by reservation rather than as a regular drop-in attraction, so this is one to plan ahead for.
Especially Worth Knowing if You're Considering a Move
Lake Gertrude is one of those places that makes more sense once you start thinking about Mount Dora as somewhere to live, not just somewhere to visit.
The roads and paths around the lake are popular for walking, running and getting outside, and the surrounding residential area gives you a very different feel from the downtown core.
There's also a public canoe access point, making the lake useful for paddlers as well as people looking for a scenic place to exercise.
If you're visiting Mount Dora for a weekend, this probably isn't the first stop I'd send you to. But if you're exploring the area because you're considering moving here, it's absolutely worth knowing about.
Good for: Scenic walks, exercise, paddling and getting a feel for residential Mount Dora.
A Different Side of Mount Dora
Downtown deserves the attention it gets. But it isn't the whole story.
Mount Dora also has trails, gardens, neighborhood parks, local food stops, antique markets and access to the Harris Chain that are easy to miss if you never venture beyond Donnelly Street.
So the next time you're tempted to spend the whole day downtown, pick one or two places from this list and see a little more of Mount Dora.
